POVERTY AND AFFLUENCE

GERMANY TO-DAY

ANOMALOUS ECONOMIC SITUATION. •

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright

LONDON, February 15. (Received February IG, at 1.30 a.in.) ' The ‘Morning Post’s’ Berlin correspondent states that the economic situation in Germany is anomalous. There arc over 2,000,000 unemployed, and there is much distress among the workers. Bankruptcies are growing at an unprecedented rate, many oldestablished businesses stopping operations. Tho men complain that tho unemployment pay is despicable. An unemployed man and bis wile received only thirteen marks in Berlin, though the lowest a man and his wile can live on is twenty-six marks, yet gaiety in Berlin is more than it has been fo" years. Tho church and other organisations are begging people to desist from holding masque balls and other carnival revelry while distress is prevalent; but tho public has gone to the other extreme. It is calculated that more than £250,000,000 has been lent to Germany since August, 1924. The financiers are very optimistic, especially as Americans are buying large parcels of shares in industrial enterprises.—A. and N.Zi. Cable.
