BOXING. CASEY AGAIN BEATS VOLAIRE. A fifteen-round professional contest at Gisborne last night between Volaire and Casey went the full distance, Casey getting the decision on points. The contest was one long series of in-fight-ing, and was not particularly interesting. After the thirteenth round Volaire was content to keep out of danger. LAWN TENNIS. MOST PLAYERS PROFESSIONALS. The ‘Daily Herald,’ in an editorial, Gays; “The absurd pretence is kept up that lawn tennis players whose performances are of no interest to the public throughout the, world are amateurs. It is supposed that somehow the game would deteriorate and they would lose caste if they admitted that their expenses are paid in cash with a' bit over. Some, it seems, are hired by the '»jwii tennis ball makers to push sales; others have arrangements with the film companies, and some write or allow their names to appear at the top of articles. Why not squash this scandal and admit that most of the lawn tennis players are really professionals. It is only antiquated prejudice to find anything derogatory in such a course.” —A. and N.Z. Cable, ' BOWLING. SOUTH OTAGO TOURNEY. Twenty rinks have entered for the South Otago Association's tournament, winch will be played on the Balclutha and Kaitangata Greens to-morrow, commencing at 8 a.in. The entries comprise eight rinks from the Balclutna Chib, four from Kaitangata, three from Milton, two from Stirling, two from Benhar, and one rink from Qwaka. Six nominations have been received for the South Otago champion of champions singles competition, which will ho played on the Stirling Green on Saturday, March 6. The following clubs will be represented:—Milton, Balclutha, Stirling, Benhar, Kaitangata, and Owaka. BRITISH TEAM’S TOUR. The British bowlers met a combined team from Thorndon, Knrori, Kbaud allah, Johnsonville, and-Otaki, and woii by 172 points to 128 points. Only one Wellington rink won out of the eight. Most of the games were played in rain. The visitors were entertained at a smoke concert in the Town Hall, Wellington, last night, and to-day some left for Sydney and South Africa. Messrs Melville and Orchard will take part in the Australian tournament.
