The Cantcrbuo - -Auckland Rlnnket I Shield match began to-day in fine weather on a good wicket. Smith (Auckland) won the toss and decided to bat first- Horspool and -Mills opened, both ;batting carefully, and taking lew risks. Mills’s first two scoring strokes were , boundaries, but the majority of the ; runs came from singles at the rate of , a run a minute. With ■! 1 on the board Horspool was clean-bowled by Read. • Snedden followed. 1-—IS- —4-1. With the score at 63 for one wicket ' M‘Ewin replaced Findlay. Runs continued at the rate of one a minute. With the score at 75 Mills swung M'Ewin to sqnare-lcg, but ho did not get on to it properly- o Ho was caught by Gasson. 75- —-‘HSmith followed, and Talbot relieved Read. Tho ‘Daily Telegraph,’ commenting on the New Zealand cricketers’ tour, said: “The team, since tho tour first opened at Brisbane, has shown wonderful improvement. It possesses some enterprising batsmen, and Cmmingham is a bowler of outstanding ability. Blunt and Dacre were two brilliant batsmen, and Lowry also was a great success. Ailcott performed well. Tho fielding of the side was good all round. One thing tbo tour has shown is that the standard of cricket in the dominion is improving. Australia should do everything possible to assist tho New Zealanders in putting tho game on a sound basis. Financially, tho tonr was not a .success. BOXING, ANOTHER .WIN FOR RING. WELLINGTOX, January 8. Tho British bowling team arrived hero ibis afternoon on route for Dunedin. They were given an enthusiastic welcome at the railway station by a large gathering of howlers, including Mr Mercer, the president of the Dominion Bow-ling Association. The visitors were given a Government reception this afternoon.
