POST-PRIMARY EDUCATION

CRITICAL STAGE BEACHED. “There is no doubt tho secondary schools are still carrying on their rolls some boys who would bo doing better in a different form of school or in a syllabus of work which tho secondary schools at present are unable to give,” said Mr F. W. Gamble, head master of tho Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland, at tho broaking-up ceremony.. General observation of tho work done in the school during tho year, ho added, again pointed to tho existence of a great deal of waste effort in tho case of boys who were unfitted for the full course of secondary work. Tho whole question of [Hist-primary work had just now reached tho critical stage where a definite decision would need to be made as to tho host future policy. Junior high school work had been proved effective already, and he had reason to believe that the fuller value of this work would bo seen in tho next two years. Tho widening of the junior hmh school movement would necessarily affect to a great extent the organisation and scheme of tho city secondary schools. They would he asked to face changed conditions in the lower section of tho school, and-even tho higher divisions might be affected. But, whatever else tho changes would involve, one satisfactory feature of tho now plans would bo the directing of tho primary pupils to tho suitable higher schools and the abolition of the existing almost haphazard selection of a child’s higher education.
