AFTER-HOUR TRADING
FINE IMPOSED; LICENSE ENDORSED In the City Police Court this morning, before Mr H. W, Bundle, S.M., William Janies Bovis, licensee of the Rugby Hotel, was charged with on December 11 selling liquor during closed hours. There was against him, too, a charge of exposing liquor for sale.
Mr A. C. Hanlon, for defendant, pleaded guilty. Senior-sergeant Quartermain said that at 11.15 p.m. two men were seen to enter the Rugby Hotel. Accosted on coming out, one of them was found to bo in possession of two bottle of beer. The licensee himself had sold it. Counsel said that defendant had no excuse. The men had asked for beer, and defendant had foolishly sold it to them. He Had no previous convictions against him. The Magistrate: Apparently this selling of liquor after hours has been prevalent for some time, and the police arc quite properly taking steps to stop it. Defendant will bo convicted and lined £5 and costs. An order will bo made for the conviction to be endorsed on the license.
The other charge was withdrawn.
