An explosion in the Birchcnwood colliery at Kidsgrove, in Staffordshire, occurred when the afternoon shift was still below the groonj. A fire followed the explosion. Rescuers, who rushed to the scene and worked heroically all night, saved all except seven men, the body of one of whom was brought up tin's morning.
