SHORT WEIGHT.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—ln the columns of your paper there appeared some time, ago quite a number of letters dealing with the above-mentioned subject, and strongly denouncing the now-common use of the spring balance scale in preference to the beam scale, with weights which enable a purchaser to see at a glance the correctness or otherwise of his purchase. Chancing across one of these letters prompted me to weigh my purchases. Judging from the result I am convinced the public would also get a surprise were they to weigh all their purchases, and considering the high cost of living T think' it time the authorities, hy actual investment, made some endeavor to protect the public from being defrauded in the matter of weight of food, etc., chiefly in respect

of bread and fruit. Originally I purchased bread over the counter, but discovering that my pan loaf was often from )oz to Goa short of .jib, and finally proved 12oz short, I decided to make a change. My present baker delivers my pan loaf, charging Is Id tier loaf, hut the apparent customary deficiency in weight is still in existence. The following is my experience ol weighing my purchases for the past three months:—Bread (pan loaj), Invent-y-ti ve pn rehasos—deficiency, ooz to Goa on twenty-two occasions. Ern'it, thirty-six 21b purchases —deficiency. 2oa to 4oV, on twenty occasions. Peas, eight ,']lh purchases—deficiency, Boa to 4 oa on three occasions. Fish, meat, and groeerios, all usually lair My scales arc beam scales, with Government stamped weights, and the above results can bo verified by four independent persons, some stating that their experience has been somewhat similai. I . m( etc., Norttiender. December 21.
