VARIETY OF EVENTS SANDERS CUP TRIALS LOCAL CLUB RACES. A I'u 11-sail breeze Iroiu the northcast caused the Sanders (hip trial on Saturday afternoon to be a good one. The competing 11-looters were lona (the cup-holder)) Kia Ora, A\ lull red, Eunice, and Heather, and magnificent canvasses wore carried. Unfortunately only Heather finished the course, and towards the end of the race lona was her only competitor. Heather had a good lead when lona, capsized, and she went unchallenged tor about the last quarter of a mile. The boats were sent away at o.ltl p.m. lona, crossed the lino first, followed by Kia Ora, Heather, Winifred, and Eunice in that order. The craft made tor the Peninsula on the firso tack, lona occupying the weather position. Kia Ora weathered lona when near the other side ot the harbor, and Soon Winifred and then Heather followed suit. Winifred went up on Kia Ora, hut she lost some of the wind, while Kia Ora retained it. lona secured third place by weathering Eunice and Heather. The fleet maurcuvred on short boards for the remainder of the voyage to the rounding mark. On the run to the starting lino the set spinnakers bellied with tho wind to give great pace. lona had obtained tho lead, but when oil Castle Beacon she was overtaken by Kia Ora. .Heather was footing it in great style, and the first round was completed by' Kia Ora about twenty seconds ami twenty-five seconds before loua and Heather respectively. Eunice retired without completing the first round. On the port lack the boats again made lor the Peninsula, and Heather was quick to gain the second position. Heather sailed fast from the Peninsula on a long tack to starboard, and increased her lead Iroin the Kia Ora. On a long hoard along the retaining wall wore Heather, lona, and Winifred when approaching the mark off the Cove. .lona rounded ahead _ot Heather by seven seconds. With skied spinnaker, after a minof trouble had been disposed 01, the old favorite planed to tho finishing line. _ She passed Jana, which boat had neither jib nor spinnaker out, and ended the race about a quarter of a mile ahead of lona. The cnp-holder was capsized hv a sudden pnfl ol wind. Ivia Ora and Winifred did not finish. Heather's sailing time was Ih IGinin 23scc.

Messrs W. J. P. M'Cullocli, A. Dawson, J. Thomson, and A, Booth sailed tho trial-winner.

In the absence of the official fol-low-up launch, Mr Sundslrum followed the race with the Norana. lona’s screw were quite a time in the wafer before the Norana and other launches rendered assistance. ■ Tho boat could *iot be raised, so she was loft to drift* for a time. On Saturday night, however, lona was recovered at Anderson's Bay.

AUCKLAND, December 19. Tiic third trial race to decide tho Auckland challenger for the Sanders Cup resulted in Rona beating Avalon by two seconds, with Queen March one minute forty-live seconds away third.

HAVENSROURNE BOATING CLUB

Tho motor boat and yacht races under the auspices of tho Ruvensbonnio Boating Club on Saturday afternoon were far from successful. The Sanders Cup trial and tho races hold (iy the Otago Club attracted 'most of the club’s supporters, and tor the launch race only two boats were despatched by the starter. Three boats jockeyed for positions at the start of the yacht race,' hut two collided and took no part in the race, and the third boat returned to tho shed when the skipped saw that there was no competition. A fairly good start was made in the power boat race, Marowa leading Eclipse over by five seconds. When tho boats were past tho jetty on their way down to tho buoy off Black Jack’s Point Marewa wivs ten seconds in front of Eclipse, and gained further before the finishing line was crossed. The start was made at 2.15 p.m. oyer a course of live miles. The finishing times were:—Marewa, 3-25-1.'!; Eclipse, 3-25-30. After allowances for handicaps, tho following result was announced: —Eclipse (W. Webber), 35scc, 1; Marewa (Robertson brothers), scr, 2; Eclipse winning by ISscc on corrected time

Eileen, May, and Experiment wore the only three boats in the yacht race. At the stare Eileen moved up fast, and May came across on the wind for a position. Experiment was running •to the line, and tailed to give way -to May, which struck the other yacht amidships. May and Experiment became locked together, and, as the boats could not break apart, Eileen’s skipper saw there was going to bo no competition, so lie returned to the start. The race was declared off, and will be sailed later. OTAGO YACHT CLUB RACES. The Otago Yacht Club held its first series of club races lor yachts and motor boats ou Saturday afternoon under ideal weather conditions and rising tide. A strong breeze from the north-east prompted most of the boats to carry a couple of reel's. In the General Handicap for yachts a good start was made, Sea Hawk, Shadow, Mona, Lark, Mavis, and Minnow getting away in quick succession on gunfire. Shadow look tiro lead on the beat to Chailis’s buoy, and continued to improve her position on the run back, finally winning as the result of good handling with 4miii 40scc to spare. The 12ft 6m and under sailing dinghies brought three entrants, but with Colleen disabled Lassie and Spray set off at 8.43, and wore capably handled in the strong breeze by their juvenile crews. The race for motor boats q h.p. was started under the Mark hoy system. Hazel took Mavis in tow to the Boat Harbor, and lost her chance of leaving on time, but pluckily set out late. ■ The race for motor boats i h.p. and over was timed to start at 4.30 p.m., hut just before this lona, in the lift trials, capsized near the Three Logs, and most of these boats and others went to the crew’s assistance and picked them up and towed lona to moorings.
