GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES The vacation ceremony of the Otago Girls’ High School took place in His Majesty’s Theatre last night. There were many visitors, and between them and the pupils the theatre was crowded. The school choir under Mr 5,5. P. Gale opened the programme by singing the cantata ‘ The Snow Fairies,’ and the third form gave an accurate display of marching that won them hearty applause. Graceful wand exercises by girls of the fourth form and club swinging by the seniors wore equally appreciated. ... At, the prize-giving ceremony Dr G. E. Thompson, chairman of the Board of Governors, presided. The lady principal (Miss M. H. M. King) was prespntod with n beautiful bouquet or flowers. Dr Thompson expressed his' pleasure at seeing such a large gathering At last the long-prayed-for hostel establishment was in sight, and the hoard expected that, it would ho available in Highgate in a few months time. The school was also shortly going to have a thoroughly up-to-date library, for which a loom had been made available. He cordially agreed with the statement in Miss King’s reaort against examinations. At present girls wore: compelled to go a man-made' mil! made for men. Examinations were planned when women were nob entering the professions. Most of our examinations worn primarily adapted for boys, and that was not as it should he. Those, wore problems on which the best brains of the world woro engaged. He expressed the deep regret of the school at the loss of the late Mr B. B. Conston, to whom tho school owed an incalculable debt. The Navy League prizes wore distributed by Mrs S. M. Park. 51 rs Park spoke of potential dangers of tho potential dangers of tho Pacific, with Its manifold Imperial trade routes. Our very existence was hound up in the efficiency of the British Navy. If we were to maintain our race pure wo must be strong enough to defend our. lelvcs against any nation that might last envious eyes upon ns. She trusted ihat in the coming year every girl for !he school would ho a member of the Savy League. Miss Edith Howes presented the Tch.ool prizes. She referred to the hard Fork and industry of the girls, and especially of the prize-winners. She showed, however, that there was much pleasure in their toil. .Interest w-as the secret of true education, and w-as indeed the secret of tho great prize of life, happiness, and serenity coming from the riches of the mind. A vote of thanks to tho staff was proposed by Miss Eraser, and very cordially carried. Prize list as under:— Dux of school: Bavina Frances Clarissa Tvnclall (Board of Governors’ Gold Medal).
