COLUMBA COLLEGE

THE CLOSING CEREMONY DISTRIBUTION OF AWARDS The awards for the year's work at Columba College wore given out at the closing ceremony in the Constance Hall at the college last night. There was a largo attendance ol visitors. Beioro tho prizes wore given out the girls of the eollcgo presented an entertainment that delighted cvervonc. , All present joined in singing tho hymn ‘Thou Givcst All,’ and the Ilcv. J. J. Quirney engaged in prayer. Mary .Jolly recited very expressively part of the. twenty-eighth chapter of Job. Tho senior girls, prettily attired, joined in a graceful ourythmic movement ‘in a Sylvan Glade.’" Other seniors appeared in a lively military ballet, and had to repeat it. The junior singing class gave ‘'Tho Wedding in Fairyland’ and ‘Tiptoe,’ and girls in costume joined in a lively Russian dance. Miss N. Evans gave a. piano solo (Schumann's ‘An important-Event’), and won hearty applause. Four scones from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream ’ wore presented by pupils in very creditable fashion. Before tho distribution of prizes Miss F. J. Ross, the lady principal, expressed her pleasure that they wore able to meet, in their own hail, which was already proving a great blessing to the school. She expressed her appreciation of the groat kindness of exColumba girls in presenting over 300 chairs, valued at .01 each. She explained tho system on which certificates were granted, and stated that tho junior school, from Standard 11. downwards, had had its break-up on Monday afternoon. Both Miss Ross and Miss Sheddan, wlm assisted in the distribution of prizes, were presented with beautiful bouquets by junior pupils. bliss Boss herself presented the awards amid the hearty applause of the audience. With reference to tho dux prize, she explained that the two girls to whom the honor tell had come nut exactly equal to a mark when all the results wore totalled—a result unique in her teaching experience. 'The duces were presented with two beautiful bouquets and heartily cheered by thoh' schoolmates. Tho Rev. Professor R. E. Davies (president of-the college) congratulated the principal, members of the staff, and the girls on their excellent entertainment that night. Tho new hall would, of course, help very much in such presentations, ,11c wished them all a happy holiday. The Rev. .1. Kilpatrick (Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand) addressed a few words to the girls, stating that the church was quite delighted witii the work done by the college.
