DEPARTING TEACHERS

GIFTS FROM SCHOOLS

At the break-up of the Maori Hill School on Thursday tho opportunity was taken of making u farewell presentation to Miss Marion S. Newlands, mistress of the school, who is leaving to take up a similar position in Northeast Valiev School. In tho forenoon, ■Mr P. L.'Clark, on behalf of the infant department, presented Miss Newlands with two beautiful ornaments, Miss Newlands suitably thanking Mr Clark for Ids kind remarks and good wishes and thanking the children for their handsome presents to her. During the afternoon function of prize-giv-ing Mr S. N. llrown, chairman of the school committee, on behalf of the scholars and staff, presented Miss .Newlands with a gold expanding wristlet watch. In doing so lie expressed tho good wishes of tho pupils and staff, and wished Miss Newlands success in Jior new sphere of usefulness. Mr J. Ifitzgorald, head master, spoke of tho good work done by Miss Newlands during her six years as mistress, after which Mr It. Webb suitably replied on behalf of Miss Newlands. Tho function coueluded with tho singing of “Tor she’s a jolly good fellow.” At the Forbury School vacation ceremony the opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Miss M. Scott, a valued member of tho staff, who is retiring from tho service on superannuation. Mr W. Fleming, chairman of the school committee, acting on behalf of the committee, the Forbury Old Boys and Girls’ Club, and the scholars, presented Miss Scott with a beautiful travelling clock, and expressed the regret of all that she was severing her connection with tho school, ot which she had been a pupil and was now a valued assistant. Their best wishes went with her in her retirement from active teaching. Mr Sproat, head master, spoke ot Miss Scott’s ability as a teacher, of tho loyal support she always gave to her head master and the school, and of her conscientious and untiring efforts on behalf of her class. He was very sorry that ho was losing so able a teacher. In her reply, Miss Scott warmlv thanked the doiiors lor their gift, the committee for its kindness to her, and the head master for his willing assistance. On tho preceding day the staff had tendered Miss Scott a social at which they presented her with a toilet sot. Opportunity was also falcon to present Miss Ronlreo, who is leaving to be married, with a crystal salad bowl and jelly dishes.
