ARCHERFIELD SCHOOL

BREAK-UP BAY The break-up function of the Archerfield School for girls was held last evening in St. Andrew’s Hall, and the building was crowded. Miss Watt stated that the epidemic in the early part of the year had meant heavy work on the part of the* staff. She believed that the usual amount of work had been covered, so teachers and pupils had earned their holidays. Congenial work (continued Miss Watt) made for happiness, and home science ami cookery were very important subjects. If girls had means of earning a living when they left school it would he a good thing, but a girl should not neglect cultural topics for a subject she specially liked. All girls had to attend to their physical education as well as other forms, lint character development was the most important thing to bo accomplished. The speaker then referred to the values of courage, concentration, truth, honor, and nobilitv.

The school report stated that there had been a further increase of twentytwo in the number of pupils. Last year one girl passed with credit the University entrance scholarship examination; seven girls entered for mathematics, and six passed; four entered for the intermediate examination, and three passed. In all outside examinations twenty-five girls entered, and of these twenty-three passed, making 92 per cent, of passes for the year—a very satisfactory result, Ibis year eighteen girls entered for the proficiency examination; fifteen gained proficiency, and throe competency certificates. The school entered for tne interschool nethall, tennis, and swimming competitions, and won the cup in the B grade netball. The outstanding event of the school year had been the very successful bazaar which was held, and as a result of which most valuable and useful equipment had boon obtained. Inspector Fleming expressed gratitude to Mrs Nisbet'Ythc principal) for the work she and her staff had done during the year. One of his girls had gone right through nfie school, and the examples she had been sot spoke volumes for the institution. Another point of significance was that Archerfield turned out girls with a real love of literature. The inspector ended his remarks by cordially thanking Miss Watt for all she had done in the school’s interest. Dr Merrington supijortcd Mr Fleming’s remarks eulogising .Miss Vvatt, and concurred with the inspector s other statements.* Ho added that one. could not help associating with the school the name of Mrs Cleghorn.
