MELODY AND MAGIC

EUTERTAIKMEHT AT HIS MAJESTY’S Although the entertainment given in “His Majesty’s Theatre last evening was presented under the auspices of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, there was nothing antediluvian about it, and the organisers and performers deserved a better late that the weather and amusement-seekers meted out to them. The programme was varied and novel enough to suit the most finicky tastes in this matter, and some of the turns with a Ittle more polish might put some of the professional artists to sliame. The chief event in the first half was the presence on the stage of a couple of performers who were described as “ Chinese magicians and conjurors,” further information being offered to the ellect that they wore making their “ first appearance in the dominion. ” One of the “ Celestials ” suggested that he was making his first appearance anywhere in the world, his best effort being when he gave an imitation of a Chinee in a state of slumber. His fellow practitioner in the black arts, however, with the aid of a lot of glitteringly now apparatus, succeeded in awakening his partner, and also the interest of the audience, with a number of wondorsomo stunts that should prove decidedly more entertaining by the time some of the tinsel is off his properties, as he is still in the amateur class. The versatile It, A. Matthews, with the aid of a number of assistants, presented a pleasing Hawaiian scena. A feature of the faro was the Highland dancing of Babs Saul, Lorna Budge, and llhona Beale, The vocal contributions were given by Misses Wheeler, Porteus, Jefferson, Emerson, and Mr Wheeler, and Miss Elva Pearce essayed a violin solo. Bcgg’s orchestra provided some acceptable harmonics.
