DURATION OF THE WAR
OFFICIAL FICTION DATES. Air Algernon Ashton writes to the ‘Daily Chronicleln spite of my repeated protests against the wrong inscriptions on many of the war memorials stating that the Great AVar lasted from 1914 to 1919—instead of 1918—f am extremely disappointed and annoyed to find that the same mistake has been made on the magnificent new artillery monument in Hyde Park corner! AVhat are these stupid inscriptionmongers thinking about?” The ‘ Chronicle ’ appends the following footnote: —‘‘Actual hostilities were terminated by the armistice of November 11, 1918,” ‘termination of the war with Germany’ was fixed by Order in Council as January 10, 1920; with Austria as August 9, 1920; and with Bulgaria as August 10, 1920. Finally, after some confusion, a general Orderin Council was issued defining the official termination, except as regards Turkey, as August 31, 1921. Thus, by an official fiction, the ‘war’ lasted over seven years; in fact, four years and four months.’ ”
