Professor Clark Miller, of Yale University, and Dr Ellree, of the Rockefeller Institute, New York, have been tonring New Zealand, studying our University system, and after spending a few days in Dunedin they went off to. Wellington this morning, en route for Australia. Tho Chancellor of the Otago University (Mr Sidcy) and several of the professors farewcllecl them on the railwav platform. Mr W. T. fTazlctt went by the II .30 express to-day, bound for Wellington. Mr W. T.‘Morrison, Conservator of Forests for Canterbury and Otago, wont to Christchurch to-day after a visit_to Dunedin to fix up matters in connection with the Forestry exhibit. Mr A. E. Entrican, tho Forest Products Engineer, is. to be in. charge of the exhibit and is already here. The Rev. Howard Elliott came from luvercargill last night and _weht on this morning, booked for Wellington. Mr A. 0. Hanlon was a passenger for Wellington by the 11.30 train to-day. Mr R. Fisher travelled to-day from Dunedin to Christchurch. Mr Janies Brown, president of the United Commercial Travellers’ Association, left Dunedin this niornng to pay his official visit to Auckland.
Mr A. A. Carson, timber and_ plywoods importer, of Wellington, is in Dunedin for a few days. Constable Bonisch, of Owaka, has received intimation of bis promotion to the rank of sergeant. Ho will bo transferred to Dunedin, taking up his duty early next month.
Opportunity was taken at the weekly practice of the Returned _ Soldiers’ Choir last evening to recognise tho services of Mr W. Gemmcll, deputy conductor of the choir. Mr P. S. Anderson, in presenting him with a silvermounted umbrella, referred to the loss they were sustaining by his_ departure to Auckland. Their association had been a very happy one, and ho expressed, on behalf of their members, their best wishes for Mr Gemmell’s future success. Dr Marsden (Assistant Director of Education) and Mr T. B. Strong (Chief inspector of Schools) addressed the Education Board for about an hour this morning on matters in connection with the training colleges. They will leave for the north to-morrow. The services rendered to the board by the Into Mr B. B. Conston were referred to at yesterday’s meeting of the High Schools’ Board of Governors by the chairman (Dr G. E. Thompson). Ido stated that Mr Conston in particular had taken a great interest in the sports side of tho Girls’ High School. It was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr Conslon’s relatives. _ At the monthly meeting of the High Schools’ Board of Governors yesterday it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to tho relatives of the late Inspector Nicolson. Dr Thompson said that it was recognised that Mr Nicolson had been one of tho best teachers ever employed by the Otago Education Board.
A Press Association cablegram from London states that Lord Justice Moore has been appointed Lord Chief Justice of Ireland in succession to the late Sir Denis Henry. To have served for nearly fifty-ono years with the one firm, and to^ see it extend from a small undertaking in Dunedin to a big concern with branches all over New Zealand, is a record which not a great many can claim. The other day, however, 'Mr Vv. Dickson, who joined the firm of Messrs Boss and Glendining in 1874, retired after continuous service to the present day. He was met by the members of the staff of the warehouse and presented with two easy chairs as a token of their esteem, a number of speakers referring to Mr Dickson’s long and intimate connection with the firm.' The wish was expressed that Mr Dickson, who is 71) years of age, would enjoy his years of retirement and remember 'the pleasant relations with members of the staff.
Miss A. M. Robertson, who purposes 'retiring on superannuation, lias resigned her position of commercial teacher- at the King Edward Technical College. The Board of Managers regretfully accepted the resignation, thanking Miss Robertson for her Jong and valuable service.
