TUDOR ERA SLUMS TO GO
PLYMOUTH VANISHING. Tiie old town of Plymouth, so intimately related to the days 6f Henry VIH. and Queen Elizabeth, is gradually disappearing. Sentence of demolition has now been passed on some of the buildings in the Barbican, the most historic and ancient quarter of the town. Three areas, medically declared to be hotbeds of infection, that are to be cleared, include five streets of 233 houses. Some of the cobble-stoned thoroughfares are so narrow that it is possible to lean out of the upper rooms and shake hands with the people in the houses on the opposite side. Regret in expressed at the pending changes, but it is realised that it is better to pay the builder than the doctor, and the old slums will give place to good houses, broad streets, and open spaces.
