ASSISTAHT DOCKHASTER APPOINTED The appointment of an assistant dock master for Otago Harbor was made at a meeting of the Harbor Board, held yesterday afternoon, those present being the chairman (Mr J. Loudon), Messrs J. E. MaeManus, J. A. Roberts, T. Anderson, H. E. Moller, W. How, A. Cable, and Captain Coll M‘Donald. The Chairman reported that there were thirty-four applications for the position of assistant dockmastor. The harbor master (Captain Maclean) and he had gone through them and had selected six names, it was still open to members to make other recommendations. The six names were submitted in order of merit. Captain M'Donald moved that the applicant first on the list should bo appointed. Mr Moller moved ns an amendment that a ballot bo taken. That, he pointed out, had always boon the practice in regard to appointments. The voting resulted in a tie of three, and the chairman gave his vote in favor of a ballot being, taken. The ballot resulted in the appointment of Mr Charles Smith. His duties will commence on November 1. Mr Smith belongs to Port Chalmers, where he is employed by a firm of shipwrights. COAL TENDERS. Three tenders -were received for the supply of screened, unscreened, and small coal. The tenderers woreMessrs John Mill and Co., 34s f)d a, ton for unscreened coal (Westport--Stockton). Messrs A. J. Allen, 39s 6d a ton for small coal (Moody Creek or Smith's). Westport Coal Company. 44s 6d a ton for screened coal (Westport). 40s 3d for unscreened, and 39s for small. It was decided to accept the lowest or most eligible tender in each class, subject to the approval of the engineer and Messrs Moller and Gow.
