OBITUARY

HON. T. W. HISLOP. [Pkh United Press Association.] WELLINGTON. October 2. The Hon. Thomas William Hislop, M.L.0.. died to-night at his home. Up to a few days ago ho was apparently in the best of health. The Hon. Thomas William Hislop, M.L.0., was born near Edinburgh in 1850, and was the son of Mr John Hislop, F.R.8.5., LL.D., Edinburgh University. He was married in 1878, and had two sons and three daughters. His wife died several years ago, and ho again married a few years ago. He was educated at the primary school, Taieri. Shaw's Primary School, Otago Boys’ High School, and the Otago University, Ho was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in August, 1871. He. was elected as member for the Wail aid seat in the House of Representatives in January, 1876. resigning in May, 1880. He represented Oamaru m the House of Representatives from 1885 till 1890, being defeated in the latter year. The late Mr Hislop was Cblonial Secretary in the Atkinson Ministry (1887-89), was Minister of Education (1889-91), and was Mayor of Wellington (1004-08). He drafted the optional clauses in tlie Land Act in 1887 and the restrictions on acreage of purchase (still operative). He introduced some social measures which were carried and some which were taken up by the Beddon Government later. The deceased practised law at Oamaru from 1871 till 1890, and was Crown Prosecutor from 1872 till 1876. He was created an Officer of the Legion in 1889. Ho served on school committees and benevolent societies while residing in Oamaru. CAPTAIN MACBETH. The announcement of the death of Captain Frederick William Macbeth at his residence in St, Clair on Wednesday will have been read with regret not only by his personal friends, but by many travellers, for he w'as a well known and popular master in the Union Steam Ship Company’s service. He was born in Aberdeen _ sixty-six years ago, served his in sailing vessels, and joined the Union Company in tho nineties, when he brought out the cargo steamer Poherua. After a term as chief officer in colonial waters he became a master of vessels in the Islands trade, commanding in turn the Ovalau. Taviuni, and Corinna. Then he had charge of other vessels—tho Warrimoo, the Mokoia in the intercolonial trade, the Mararoa for a time in the Wellington-Lyttolton ferry service, the Monra, and the Monowal in the Aucldand-East-Cosat-Dunedin trade. Captain Macbeth resigned from the Union Company’s active list in 1915 owing to ill-health, and was appointed assistant to Captain O. M'Donnld, then marine superintendent for the Union Company, with headquarters at Dunedin. Captain Macbeth held the position for about six month, when ho retired, and since then had jived at his home up to tho time of his death. It was an accident near Suva that was tho primary cause of his illness—a fall from a horse. Prior to that he was a strong man. He married Miss Brenda Coughtrey, second daughter of Dr Coughtrey. Mr Millen Macbeth, the son, resides in the north.
