STELLA MURRAY

A GREAT CONTRALTO A successful career on the concert platforms of London is one of the best recommendations that can be advanced by a visiting, singer. It may bo claimed by Stella Murray, the New Zealand contralto, who recently returned to the dominion after a highly successful stay in the Old Country, Describing Stella Murray’s recital at Christchurch, the ‘Sun’ saidi “Last evening for once Christchurch did the right thing and turned out en masse to pay homage to one of its own—one who by sheer determination and hard work had laboriously scaled the heights which guard the musical Parnassus. Seldom has such a representative audience packed the Theatre Royal (hundreds were unable to gain admission), and seldom has any audience had its anticipations so pleasurably realised. From start to finish the recital was a triumph, leaving the critics little to do but amplify this fact in such happily-worded phrases as may fall from the pen at the time of writing.

“ So many and varied arc the qualifications essential to any vocalist .aspiring to musical fame that voluminous text books have been written by the score to enumerate them. These qualifications Stella Murray has a-plonty. Her voice is beautifully mellow, with velvety quality throughout its various registers. Her range is a really remarkable one, with no suggestion of unevenness or ‘ break ’ throughout its entire gamut. Her enunciation and intonation are perfect, and to an almost perfect vocalisation she adds ease and gracefulness and a rare gift of interpretation.” Stella Murray’s Dunedin recital will be given in His Majesty’s Theatre next Tuesday night. Tlie supporting artists aro Harold Beck, a brilliant young exponent of the violoncello, and Harold Whittle, the accompanist, who is all that an accompanist should be. Among the great and world-famous artists to whom he has been accompanist are Dame Nellie Melba, Albani, Paul Dufault, CopelJi, and many others. Tho box plan is now open at The Bristol.
