TAXI STANDS
CHANGED POSITION RECOMMENDED The General Committee of the City Council reports that as tho tramways deportment will be using the loop line in front of the old post office building continuously during the Exhibition period, it will not be possible for tho taxi rank in this locality to remain in its present position during that time. Considerable difficulty is now being experienced in finding suitable central locations for taxi stands, and the best arrangement in respect of the present post office drivers would be to reopen the rank on the north side of Water street, adjoining the Stock Exchange Building, and to put the post office drivers on the new rank on the opposite side of the street. This will involve moving the hansom cab drivers from Water street, and it is proposed that they be placed in Liverpool street, near the intersection witji Princes street. The committee will submit formal resolutions embodying the above proposals for the consideration of tho council at its meeting on Wednesday night.
