PURAKANUI AMENITIES

ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY. The Purakanui Amenities Society held its annual meeting in Mr l i. Divers’s board room last evening. The president (Mr H. J. Hamel) occupied the chair. The annual report contained the following clauses; —At the commencement of the season the usual inspection of the track was made, and both it and the road received attention from the council; the truck, however, was not very good owing to the amount of rain and the number of wandering cattle. On August 21 a deputation waited upon the Waikouaiti Council to urge upon them the necessity of remctalllng and generally improving the main road through the township, and also widening the corner at the junction of Iho Waitati and Hayward's Point roads, as the township was becoming a popular visiting place for motorists. The deputation received a very sympathetic hearing, the council deciding to veto £'lo towards the cost if the society would provide a like amount. This the society lias done, and it is therefore expected that a good road and parking place will be available for the coming season. Permission was obtain from the county council to construct a parking place for cars, and also to erect a notice asking motorists to refrain from parking their cars on tho road. The former project was abandoned, but the latter lias been carried out. Two lifebelts were placed in position on the waterfront for lifesaving purposes. The balance-sheet showed a. credit balance of £ll 2s Id, and a credit balance in the picnic fund of £4 11s 9d, making a total of £ls 13s Kid. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following office-bearers were elected President, Mr H. J. Hamel; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Abernathy; committee —Mrs Nisbet, Messrs Gard’nor, Paterson, Fry, Davidson. Aberncthy, Jackson, Williams, Wilkinson, Gibson, and A. J. Queimell. It was decided to support the Miliiwaka and Purakanui district in its effort to obtain a public telephone.
