EXHIBITION OPERA

Evidence that matters are moving steadily forward in connection with the Exhibition Operatic Society was forthcoming at the meeting of the committee oi that body which was held yesterday afternoon and attended by Messrs J. 11. 'Walker (chairman), T. Ritchie, J. Hunter, F. Tyson, G. A. Wycherley, R. Benncll, and Scott Colville, and Mrs B. Macassoy. The principal matter dealt with was that of choosing an opera or musical comedy for the second production, and, Mr Scott Colville having submitted half a dozen titles, in addition to correspondence and his views concerning the same, ‘Our Miss Gibbs’ was decided upon and authority given to make the necessary arrangements. The Chairman reported that Mr Harrison Cook, who hud boon appointed to produce two pieces, had come to Dunedin, and attended the practice on Wednesday evening. Mr Cook had expressed himself as thoroughly satisfied with tho_ vocal strength displayed at the practice. A tender for the painting and supply of the necessary scenery, etc., lor the first production (‘Floradora’) was accepted. It was decided that, as the choir contest at the competitions was to take place next Wednesday, there would be no practice of the ‘ Floradora ’ chorus that evening. , „„ r _ . The Mavor, on behalf of Mrs Tapley (a member of the committee), wrote thanking the society for their expression of sympathy in connection with her recent illness.
