SOVIET RUSSIA
PEASANT RESISTANCE. WON’T SELL FOODSTUFFS. Pres* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September 17. The ‘Morning Post’ states; “The efforts of the Russian Government _to pacify the peasantry have met with scant success. The peasants are refusing to sell foodstuffs unless they receive their requirements of manufactures. The peasants send investigators to the market towns to find what goods are offered. If the report is unfavorable no grain is marketed. Even when an army of Soviet grain buyers invades the countryside many peasants will refuse to sell, knowing that they will not be able to purchase much-needed, goods. “ State undertakings have also been cheating the peasants by selling inferior extortionate prices, and are now without sufficient provisions to feed towns or districts where the crops have failed. “Another symptom of peasant discontent is their voluntary migration to Syria. Many thousands of peasants are going.”—Reuter.
