ASHBURTON MEETING. NOTES ON THE RACJNG. [Special to the ‘Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, September 18. Though the Ashburton Racing Club was fortunate enough to horn its Spring Meeting at liiccarton, instead of on its own course, which is out of order, the gathering did not attract much attention from racegoers, low country visitors attended, and altogether the support was disappointing. Despite the recent rough weather, little fault could bo found witn the •going, and the inclusion _ of several New Zealand Cup horses in the fields endowed the sport with more than average interest. Few of the competitors that had not sported silk at the Grand National Meeting wore forward enough to do themselves full justice. For this reason, it would he unwise to place too much reliance on their form, which is sure to change vastly in the course of the few weeks. After a poor start the betting dragged all through and at the finish only a total of £12,081 was shown, compared with £12,247 last year. The proceedings started with the Penscroft Hurdles, 11m, and in a field of four Bonomol was heavily backed. He ran a wretched race. Halt a mue from home Eonmark had the issue in safe keeping, and, landing over the last fence well clear of a beaten field, won without being troubled by qmto ten lengths. After losing a lot pt ground by faulty jumping, Red ivnss just outstayed Lisogne for second money. Bonomel’s display was altogether too bad to bo correct. Tbongli there were fourteen starters in the Braemar Welter, 7f, backers summed up the position so correctly that tbo winner and runner-up were Mrong ly backed. Malaga jumped out very smartly, while Fresco, on the extreme outside, was almost last. At the end of a furlong, going round the top turn, La Reve passed Malaga, the pair being closely attended by Brown Lads. Clariena, and Jubilant, the last named of whom got a bad set-back. A Her being first into line for home La Reve son beat Retreat, leaving Magala in cliarge from Rigel, Brown Lady, and Clareina. When it came to business Clareina bad no difficulty in settling the pretensions of Fresco, who made up a lot of ground in tbo straight. The winner, who has been under a cloud for over six months, showed a return to her best form, and will take a, lot of stopping in future events. I' or a horse not ncarlv ready Malaga gave a promising display. wl>ile Ivukunio, after being ns slow as usual to begin, was finishing strongly. Interest was lent to tbo nnuaul Handicap, 7f. by tbo presence of three well-fancied New Zealand Cup eandidates—Count Favour, Tarleton, and Deucalion. Probably from the Ln,t of having C. Emerson in the sack! e, Boadicea was backed down to a false price, the only others in demand being Deucalion, Rawenc, and Barn Owl. Eawene and Cocb-y-bondhn were responsible for the early running from Ferino and Boadicea, while Barn Owl and Tarleton had been slow to begin. With half the journey covered Cocb-y----bondhu had a useful lead from Rawene and Ferino. As they’ straightened up for the run home Cocb-y----hondhn was still in charge, but at the outer stand Bawene bad her measure, winning comfortably by a length. After being well back at tbo top turn Deucalion finished so strongly as to cut Coch-y-bondhn out of second mone, with Ferino and Barn Owl close up. If any notice could be taken of the race as a Cup trial, the honors were all with Deucalion, whoso finishing effort was impressive. Count Favour and Tarleton all went poor races, but little heed should bo taken of the showing of the first named. All heavy investments in the Alienton Hack Handicap Welter, Of, were for Miss Minerva, Money Order, and John Bradbury. All through the first furlong there was little to choose between Ronald, Last Dart, Flaming Ray, and Grey Lass, prominent amongst the others being John Bradbury and Miss Minerva. There was little change till well into the course proper, where Ronaki drew well dear, and Last Dart lost his place. Right to the distance Ronaki looked all over a, winner, but there John Bradbury came along with a fine finishing effort and just got his head in front on flic post. The winner’s performance wi. a particularly smart one; and fie wol be greatly benefited by tbo race. Miss Minerva and Money Order never nian»ged to get into the fighting lino, while the English-bred Last Dart was beaten at the end of half a mile. Bittern, a member of F. Hnhnos’s. Jim., team, was supported for the Selma Trot, IJm, as if the result was a foregone conclusion. r Jbe only others in demand were Guide Raniri, Hoon Hay, and Biddy Logan. When the big field bad settled to business Miss Dorothy, Logan Maid, Guide Rang;, and Bittern formed the leading division. There was little to choose between this‘bunch for a mile, but then Guido Rangi and Bittern drew away, and Tommy Bells took fourth place. After being first into line for home, Bittern looked a certain winner ot the outer stand. When asked for a final effort, ho went to a had tangle, allowing Logan Maid to score a lucky vin by a length. Over-anxiety on tho part of his driver undoubtedly cost Bittern tho race.

Arpent, with C. Emerson up, was backed clown to a false price for the Alford Hack Handicap, 6f, the only others whose chances were considered being Chickwheat and Goldtown. After giving a good deal of trouble at ’the start, Windshield was soon cut in front with Arpent and Some Abbey. When well into the home straight Arpent and Some Abbey had drawn v ell clear, while Chickwheat and ‘entrepiece could he noticed .mprov.ng their positions. Once challenged., by t hckwheat, the favorite compounded badly, and in the last few strides Centrepiece also headed him. • Chickwheat’s recent form has been of a most consistent order, and the very decisive manner in which he settled the opposition s- ggesta that he will soon have to tackle open company. Centrepiece went his best race to date after being rather slow to begin,, hut Arpent’s showing was disappointing. Yet another of C. Emerson’s mounts in Paper Bose was heavily backed for the Maiden Plate, sf, the only other whose chance found favor being Grey Eyes. On this occasion the investors jvere right on the mark, for the pair had the finish to themselves. Currency showed a fine turn of speed in the early stages, hut she could never get far away from the two favorites. Inside the distance Paper Rose had the opposition well beaten, and won with s good deal in reserve from Grey Eyes and Axrownmir. The winner is a particularly smart filly, who should have a brilliant future over short courses. A by no means interesting days sport wound up with an easy victory for Solferite in the Spring Handicap, 6f. Solferino’s greatly-improved _ son did not jump out so smartly as Fmora and Victory Bond, both of whom ran wide at the entrance to the course proper. This let Moorland up on the mils, and for a few strides he looked all over a winner. On being asked for a finishing effort Solferite put in some of his telling strides, and quickly placed the issue beyond doubt, winning very comfortably by two lengths from Moorland. Included in the field was the New Zealand Cup candidate Red Wink, who, though not nearly ready, not bp a creditable race, which is bound to benefit him.
