HORORATA’S CARGO
OTAGO IMPORTERS WANT IT RAILEB REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT. About sixty members of the Otagd Importers and Shippers’ Association attended the special meeting held last night to consider what steps should be taken to get over the difficulty caused by tho s.s. Hurorata being hung up at Lvttolton. . , , ‘Air H. C. Campbell was in tho chair. After discussion it was resolved to send a telegram to the Hon. J. G. Coates, and the following message was put on the wire this morning:— At a largo meeting of importers held hero last evening very strong exprcNiioiis or opinion were voiced that we have a lair claim in the circumstances of tlio strike to receive all tho help which, tho Government can give, and also that the Government should take the whole question in hand with a view to a quick solu-
ti°n. , ,' . In regard to the quotation for the carriage of the Hororata’s cargo to Dunedin, tho Railway ■Department lias exorcised the option (page 103 of the new tariff) to charge on measurement, which mnkesany arrangement quite impossible: indeed, in the case of a large proportion of the measurement goods it would be very much cheaper to send them as weight under ordinary rates.
Surely this is a case where the department ought to figure out the actual cost of performing this particular service aud quote a rate that, while giving a reasonable profit, would yet make an arrangement possible.
Please reply early, so that wo may call another meeting.
