PORT KEMBLA
WORKS CLOSING DOWN Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. SYDNEY, September 10. (Received September 11. at 1 a.m.) Tbe Mount Lyell coke works at Port Kexnbla are closing at the end of the month. The machinery and all the other material will he .sold. This will put ont of work a largo number of men. Tbe reason for closing is that the company’s mines and smelters in Tasmania do not now require so much coke, owing to a now process which is in use, and the balance of the coke manufactured is not saleable, ns smelting is practically at a standstill on acount of the low price of metal. It is feared that the introduction of the forty-fonr-honr week will close the remaining large industries at Port Kembla.
