Cooper (New Plymouth) and W. Davis (Stratford) in the all-round tourney held at New Plymouth last Easter: —
The annotations are by Mr Brown. (a) 19-15 is very strong, as it prevents the “ Paisley ” formation. (b) 4-8 is better. (c) When moving text I completely overlooked play at (d); 18-15 is hotter. CRITICISMS. “The Old Chump ” _ writes: “In a recent issue, under ‘ Criticisms,’ game 42 (M’Donald v. Brown), 63 move (positions —Black: 11, 16. 21, k3O, 31; While: 20, 23, 24, 28, kl 4), Black to play, Mr Cnldcrwood writes: ‘M’Donald missed a rather easy draw ns follows:—lnstead of 30-25, play 31-27, 23-18, 27-23, 24-19 a,, 30-26, 19-12, 26-22, drawn, (a) 14-17, 23-14, 17-10, 30-26, 10-7, 26-31, 7-3, 31-27, drawn.’ I am not trying to upset above play, but I found this position carried a further lot of fine points, all probably loading to draws. I submit this: 31-27, 14-10, 27-18, 10-15, 18-25 a, 15-8, 23-27, 20-11, 27-20, drawn, (a) 16-19, 15-22 b, 11-150, 20-16, 19-23, etc., should draw, (b) 15-8 would lose, (c) This, I think, keeps the draw good, as 19-23 would lose the man on 11.”
