Judging by the many inquiries that have been flowing in, fifth annual Paramount week is going to be a very enthusiastic affair. Already a great number of exhibitors have written_ in signifying their intention of entering for the many contests that will he one of the great features of the season. Definite nows has now come to hand of the advertising campaign that will bo launched in the interests of Paramount week, and certainly it is the most comprehensive and elaborate scheme that has over boon put together in the interests of moving pictures in New Zealand. Fifth annual Paramount week will be celebrated between August 31 and September 5. Noah Beery, one of the most best known character actors in silent drama, recently signed a new contract with Famous Players,'giving Paramount the exclusive control of Beery’s screen activities for a period of years. Beery is at present at work on Zand Grey’s ‘Wild Horse Mesa,’_ but he will appear in the serpen version of another of Zone Grey’s works at an early date, ‘The Thundering Herd.’ Romo further details aro now available in regard, io ‘The Wanderer,’ which is announced as Paramount’s big picture for Ihe year of 19T6. Production is now under way, and the leading roles have boon assigned to Ernest Torrance, William Collierjun., Greta Nisscn, Tyrone Power, Kathlyn Williams, 'Wallace Beery, and Kathryn Hill. Judging from the east alone, tho picture may he anticipated .as something very important. It is claimed that"‘The* Wanderer’ is a very worthy successor to ‘ The Ten Commandments.’ ‘Tho Dressmaker From Paris,’ an early release, is said to he the very last word in fashion films. Fourteen mannequins. chosen from world of wealth and fashion for their surpassing beauty, wear luxurious gowns and costumes. created specially for tho picture by one of the foremost designers of Paris brought expressly for this purpose. ‘ The Dressmaker From Paris’ also brings hack to tho screen Beatrice Joy, who has been resting for some (imp after her strenuous work in ‘The Ton Commandments.’
hovers of George Gibbs’s popular works will bo delighted to learn of the a five fit to the screen of ‘ Sackcloth and Scarlet,’ which was released in New Zealand by Paramount recently. Alice Terry, who will be remembered for her Croat work in ‘The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,’ plays the lending role. She is supported hr an all-star cast of players. ‘Salome of the Tenements,’ a, romance of an East Side girl who sets out t o become a “ somebdy ” in tho world, will he screened hero shortly. Produced by Sidney Olcott, who made ‘The Green Goddess,’ ‘The- Humming Bird,’ and others, from the novel by Anzia Yczerska, author of ‘Hungry Hearts.’ Jetta Goudal, Godfrey Tcarle, and Jose Reubens are featured. The story is one of Sonya Mendal, Salome of New York tenements, who undergoes a metamorphosis from a pathetic, down-at-ihe-hcel waif to a triumphant yonng woman who wears her fashionable clothes with an air, and who wins for her husband John Manning, a man of ideals and philanthropic ideas.
