THE POPULAR BEVERAGE
WINE REPLACES WHISKY EMPIRE PRODUCTS IN FAVOR. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 20. (Received August 21, at 11.30 a.m.) According to the report of a leading wholesale wine and spirit firm, there seems reason to believe that wines to a large extent are replacing whisky aS the popular beverage. Last year I home consumption demand ioi wines showed an increase, and amounted to between 15,000,0ut and 16,000,000_ gallons. On tha other 1 sid, spirits further declined, the couMuntian now amounting to 12,000,000 gallons yearly, compared with 28,000.000 gallons in 1916. _ The demand for spirits is obviously influenced by high taxation and the tightness of money. The report adds that Empire wines have increased in popularity and demand. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
