ARCTIC EXPLORATION
MACMILLAN EXPEDITION FUTURE PLANS. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. WASHINGTON, August 10. The National Geographic Society anounces that the attempt of tho Macmillan expedition to discover an Arctic continent by means of aeroplanes will he abandoned on account of the unexpected summer snowstorms, the continuous fogs, and the unprecedented weather conditions, which prevented flying. The _ expedition will proceed immediately from Utah to accomplish: the other objectives. This decision followed a radio message from Captain Maeniillian stating that he and the members nf the expedition now agree that tho establishment of an advance station at Cape Hubbard and tho exploration of the Polar Sea from that point are not feasible this year in tho time left before the slops would have to leave Etah ahead of the ice barrier.
Tho society advised Captain Macmillan to follow his judgment in the matter and proceed with other exploration work as soon as he deems it wise, leaving the Polar Sea for a subsequent expedition. The society radioed as follows:—“We have every confidence in your decision, based on experience, expert knowledge, and integrity, and wo will stand by your decision to delay further exploration of tho unknown area. Wo concur in your proceeding with tho further plans. The society is proud of you and every man under your command. .It congratulates you ’and Commander Byrd and tho navy personnel on your splendid attempt.” Tho society contemplates continued exploration of the Norse ruins oi Greenland and Labrador for the purpose of comparison and determination whether communication existed during the eleventh century between tho now and the old worlds. It also plans_ aeroplane exploration of the interior of unknown 'Labrador to study bird and Jish life and tho Eskimo tribes; and also contemplates a Jlight to tin? great lakes region from Bafim Island.—A. and N.Z.
