PUBLIC-HOUSE LICENSES REDUCTION RECOMMENDED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 20. (Received August 21, at 9.50 a.m.) Tho ‘ Daily Alail ’ says that the Commission which investigated the liquor trade in the Free State has _ recommended cancelling 5,000 public-house licenses, of which there arc 13,000, averaging one to every 230 inhabitants. Compensation should bo paid by a levy on the remaining licenge-holders. The Commission also urged a reduction in hours during which the houses remain open, and that no drinks be served on Sunday unless the purchaser has travelled ten miles.—Sydney ‘ Sun 1 Cable.
