SOUTH ISLAND TRUNK

A REASONABLE REQUEST. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 20. A rccpiest that the Government should at least authorise the finalisation of the surveys for the completion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway was made to the Minister of Railways this morning by a largo deputation representing the combined progress leagues of the South Island. All that was asked for was a vote on the Public Works Estimates, sufficient to ensure a reliable working survey of tho route to be traversed. The deputation submitted that tin's was a modest romiest, considering tho national importance of the undertaking. The Prime Minister, in reply, said he considered the request a very reasonable oue. It was one which he entirely agreed with. A vote had already been put on the Estimates for comple : tion of tho engineering surveys, so that there was no need to do anything further. Everyone admitted that it would bo desirable to have a connection from Picton, but it was a question as to whether it would not bo a load on the country when completed. The whole point/ he said, in conclusion, was whether it was a national concern, and whether tho time was ripe for the lino to be constructed.
