STEAMERS COLLIDE
SKYER 15 IMPACT. INTERSTATE [VESSEL DAMAGED. Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright. Australian and N.Z, Press Association. MELBOURNE, August 19. 'The interstate steamers Coonni and Oonnli collided in the bay, off the Williamstown lightliouse. The Cooma mas compelled to return to port. When the vessels collided a hole about tlio size of a doorway was torn in the Oonah’s side, and water was found in the forward hold. The Cooma was damaged for 20ft between the bow and the bridge, on the starboard side, above the waterline. After the impact the Cooma glanced off the Oonah’s stern, and one of her anchors was torn olf. The impact was so severe that the passengers on the Oonah were thrown off their feet, hut no one was injured. Had the Cooma not glanced off after she struck she would have gone right through the Oonah. One woman on the latter vessel had just left her cabin, which was completely wrecked. Many of the passengers suffered from shock. The Cooma’s voyage has been cancelled. The Cooma is owned by the Australian Steamship Proprietary, and was en route to Sydney. The Oonah, which is owned by the Union Steam Ship Company, was returning to Melbourne from Tasmania.
