LAWN TENNIS.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, Augusst 18. At Forest Hills, although the last of the Canadian women were eliminated in the second round of the national championships, the ranks of British invaders remains intact. The English women all won in straight nets, Miss MTCane and Miss Fry being the most impressive. Quick, decisive results were the rule in the majority of the singles, but the period or easy victories appears to be over. Of the sixteen surviving in the second round ten are top rankers who participated in the international matches last week. They include Miss Ryan, Miss M'Kane, and Miss Penelope Anderson, of Virginia, who defeatted Miss Helen Jacobs, the junior champion, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Mrs Bundy defeated another promising Californian, Miss Charlotte Hosmer, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Mrs Bundy is a former champion, who appears to he playing with her old craft and speed. She will play her next match, against Miss Wills. The latter, who has been depending entirely upon the depth and pace of her drive, has begun to vary her game, attacking aggressively at the net, and volleying brilliantly.—A. and N.Z. Cable.

DAVIS CUP. NEW YORK, August 18. Anderson has decided, notwithstanding a bereavement, to take part in the match acnbißt Japan owing to the great responsibility of the singles. Patterson is not showing his host form, and Hawkes was recently defeated by Harnda. Anderson and Patterson will probably contest the singles’, and Patterson and Hawkes the doubles, from which Anderson has withdrawn. The weather is very oppressive.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
