VITAL STATISTICS. LOW BIRTH RATE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 18. (Resolved August 19, at 11.50 a.in.) The births for England and Wales for the quarter ended June 30 totalled 187,000. These figures are equal to the lowest birth rate recorded for any second quarter, except the war years 1917-19.

The births comprised 95,000 males and 91,000 females. The deaths totalled 122,000, which is 0.1 per cent, per 1,000 below the second quarter of last year, and comprised 6,900 males and 6,400 females. The infant mortality is equal to 00 per thousand, which is equal to the lowest rate recorded for any second quarter.—Renter.
