The ‘Taranaki Oilfields, Ltd., report that the Tarata bore has been drilled to B,oooft in shale, and the manager is preparing to run down an BJin casing, i The Moturoa bore has been drilled to j 1,600 ft in sandstone. The lOin casing has been put down, to 153 ft. j To break open and interfere with the (contents of about a dozen postal boxes j was the work of a thief nr thieves I operating in various parts of Christi church on Monday (states a Press (Association telegram). Addington, (Fendalton, Ricenrton, and Bealoy I avenue were visited, and the amazing | part of the. offences is that they were carried out in the broad daylight of late afternoon. How much the thieves interfered with the mail matter will not be known until the Post Office receives inquiries for missing letters. j One effect of the operation of the I Dairy Produce Export Control Act may ; bo to cause certain firms, whoso business in the future will be restricted thereby, to cease giving prizes at agricultural and pastoral shows in the dairy classes. This possibility was brought to the notice or a meeting of the committee of the Manawatn Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday, when a letter was received from Messrs A. H. Turnbull and Co., Ltd., Christchurch, forwarding £5 ss, being a special prize for the manager of the company winning the Weddel Challenge i Cup at the Winter Show. The matter (of prize money, the letter stated, was being brought before Messrs W. Weddel and Co., Ltd. The writer desired to state that it could not be said what the future attitude would he if compulsory control came into operation. It was unlikely they would feel inclined to continue to pay a money prize to tho cup winner each year if business were taken out of their hands. Tho letter was received, tho president remarking that, although nothing tangible .bad yet resulted, it was impossible to say what might happen. When seen yesterday by a Wellington reporter with reference to the resignation of Mr H. E. Combs, the president of the P. and T. Association, Mr J. T. Carr, . said that it was with the most profound regret that tho personnel of the Post and Telegraph Department had learned that Mr Combs bad decided to relinquish the position which ho had filled with such distinction over a long period of years. It" would be recalled that a few months ago the decision of Mr Combs to stand for parliamentary honors was made the subject of discussion by the'Wellington section of the association. At the recent conference of delegates from all parts of the dominion the matter was. again under review, with the result that resolutions were carried granting to Mr Combs full liberty of action, and expressing the utmost confidence in him ns a permanent official of the association. At the close of the debate Mr Combs thanked the ■ delegates, but at the same time announced that he had already made up his mind to resign from his position. Despite numerous requests from delegates ibat he should reconsider ibis decision. Mr Combs felt himself unable to consent, and the association would shortly lose the services of one who was honored and esteemed by the P. and T. officers throughout the dominion. By a unani-i mous vote the conference had elected Mr Combs a life member of the association, an honor which had been bestowed only twice before in the history of the organisation The statutory meeting of the committee of the Pride of the Leith Foresters’ Hall Society, Incorporated, was held on Monday evening last, with a full attendance of members. The election _of officers resulted as follows: President, Bro. J. Abbott; vice-presi-dents, Bros. W. B. Anderson and J. Hope; secretary, Bro. J. K. Macfie; assistant secretary, Bro. C. C. Robertson ; treasurer, Bro. H. C. Williamson; auditor, Bro. G. F. Ward. The objects of tho society are to acquire, renovate, and alter the Albany Street Hall; to hand same over to Court Pride of tho Leith. The following were elected the Committee:—Bros. S. M. Munro, T. P. M'Natty, J. Benfell, R. S. Yercoe, and A. E. Brown. The Works Committee comprise Bros. W. B. Anderson, H. H. Gaston, and R. H. Rutherford. Bros. E. J. E. Daniel, J. Benfell, C. S. Hawes, C. H. A.
