COMMERCIAL BANKING
MERGER PENDING
Frees Aescciation— By Telegraph—Copyright,
LONDON, August 14. ‘The Times,’ commenting on the pending merging of the Colonial AngloEgyptian Bank and the National Bank of South Africa with Barclay s Bank, says; “ The war revealed that there was less scope for banking co-operation between the various components of the Empire than between Britain and foreign States. There were no central banks outside Britain. This defect has been remedied in part by the creation of reserve banks in South Africa, India, and Australia. It is hoped that new banks will be established or similar institutions evolved in Canada, New Zealand, and elsewhere. 1 What the Bank of England succeeded in ofteoting in the field of central banking Barclay’s is seeking to achieve in the realm of commercial banking.” ‘ The Times ’ in an editorial emphasises the importance of Imperial economic unity.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
