YESTERDAY’S PARLIAMENT

THE DEPARTMENTAL VOTE Tho House of Representatives was in Committee of Supply most of yesterday considering the Estimates. Tho first item taken was the sum of £120,000 for maintenance and repairs to roads. In reply to Mr. Forbes the Prime Minister said tho amount in the vote in the Main Highways was £350,000. The vote was passed. The maintenance, irrigation, drainage, etc., vote—£7,oo0 —was passed without discussion. Grant to the domains—£o,73l, Native Department £33,089, Native Land Settlement Account —£4,605, Native Trustees Account —£13,836, were also passed without discussion. Tho Post and Telegraph Department 8 —was passed after long discussion. The Cook Islands vote of £32,504 was passed. A brief discussion on the vote ot £68,888 for the Tourist Department followed. Mr Veitch complained that the Tourist Department had only one set of sights which it advertised. It brought people down the Wanganui River, but had nothing to say about Wanganui itself, which showed a want of the proper sense of proportion.—Mr Do la Perrelle put in a claim tor a larger share of publicity in connection witli Stewart Island—“ a truly rcai.tiful spot indeed, the wonder ot the tourist and tljo paradise of the sportsman. —The vote was passed. The vote for the Printing nnu Stationery Department, £205,322, was passed without discussion, and the House rose at 11 p.m, till 2.30 on Tuesday.
