‘NEW ZEALAND.’ Various books and pamphlets on New Zealand have been published from time to time. Some are purely historical, biographical, or pictorial. Others again compass all throe, and from the impartial point of view of the tourist or visitor are the more suitable as a form of souvenir, or general guide. This class also is preferable for sending overseas to far-away friends or to exiled New Zealanders. The latest publication of this kind is ‘New Zealand; Country and People,’ issued by Messrs Whitoombe and Tombs, Ltd., and written and compiled by Constance Clyde and Alan E. Mulgan. It is a handsome book, and well set out. There are various colored plates and numerous photographs of New Zealand’s scenic beauties, primary and secondary industries, and architecture. The historical outline of the people by Mr Mulgan is complete, apd traces the dominion’s evolution from the first advent of the to. the present day. The coming of the pakeba. the Treaty of Waitangi, the first white settlements, the twelve years’ Maori War, and other incidents in New Zealand’s early days are clearly and graphically told. Dealing with the present day, both islands are described in detail, special attention, accompanied by illustrations, being paid to the scenic and tourist resorts, sporting facilities, and industries. In view or the approaching New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition the publication is especially welcome. The price is 7a 6d.
