(Received August 14, at 12.40 p.m.) The report of Sir George Buchanan upon his investigations with a view to the development of the Northern Torntry Ims been tabled in the House of Representatives. It advocates too consolidation of the railways to link up with Queensland, and thonco Irom Camooweal with the New South W ales lines at Bourko, thus bringing Hanvm into direct communication with Sydney. Such lines would be valuable lor defence. Sir George- Buchanan suggests an immediate commencement of the work, also the. improvement of Fort Hanvin, as the future of the territory depends largely on the proper development ol ihe°pastoral industry. The climate (he reports) is trying for whites, hub it could be made'snitable for them within certain limits. Closer settlement within Hie coastal area would probably prove disastrous. The report stresses the point that all questions connected with the territory should be kept out of the political arena and that all should work together for its development.
