FAiOUS ARTIST'S PLIGHT PAUPER IN ASYLUM Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 11. (Received August 12, at 12.5 p.m.) An appeaß has been inaugurated to raise £I,OOO for the famous oat artist, Louis Wain. He commenced to draw in 1880, and has drawn 150,000 cats. Despite his part prosperity, he sold the copyright of his pictures, and is now a pauper in a lunatic asylum.—A. and N.Z. Cable. [Louis William Wain, black-and-white artist, draughtsman, and animal caricaturist, was bora in London in 1860, iio studied for the musical profession till 1879, then studied art at the West London School of Art._ < Ho first drew cats in 1883, having joined the ‘ Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic Nows' in 1882. Ho was later on the staff of the 1 London Illustrated News ’ and ‘New York American.’ He was president of the National Cat Club, and was connected' with numerous organisations for the protection and care of animals. He illustrated varioijs short stories and magazine articles, and published ft large number of humorous cat and kitten books and picture post cards yearly.
