Two Dutch tugs are engaged m a record task ot towing the fire-damaged steamer City of Singapore from Adelaide to Rotterdam, as the cost ot repairs in Australia or England would be prohibitive.—Sydney ‘ Sun ’ Cable. [The steamer City of Singapore, with 7UU tons of petrol and other oils from New York a,board, caught lire on the evening of April 2(5, 1924, at Port Adelaide. Four firemen lost their lives, and thirteen other persons were seriously injured. Shortly before 11 p.m. a terrific explosion occurred, the timbers and fittings of the ship being blown high into the air. The damage was estimated at £250,000, and the opinion was expressed at the time that the ship would never leave the port again, as it would cost as much to repair her as to build a now vessel. Thu City of Singapore is one of the newest steamers of the Ellcnnan Lines, Ltd. She was built in 1923 by W. Gray and Co., Ltd., at West Hartlepool. She is a steel cruisor-stern vessel of 6,567 tons, 433 ft long, with a 57ft beam.]
