ARCHBISHOP MANNIX

QUIET TIME IN IRELAND AVOIDANCE OF POLITICS. LONDON, July 23. Dr Mannix, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, is staying quietly at his mother’s house in an obscure village in Ireland. The Irish Press is paying little attention to his sojourn. After having given the visiting prelate an enthusiastic reception, the Republican Party is frankly disappointed, as it had hoped to induce Dr Mannix and Father Flanagan to slump the country in an effort to revive enthusiasm in their lost cause.

Several public bodies presented addresses to Dr Mannix, while others dropped proposals to do likewise. Dr Mannix* in his replies, has carefully avoided auy_ reference to politics, a step which, it is suggested, was due to a hint from Rome.
