MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society was attended by the Rev. V. G. Bryan King (chairman), Mrs George Roberts, Miss Williams, Miss Rattray, Miss Graham, Messrs E. A, Rosevear and C. B. Smith.
From Invercargill Red Cross was received reimbursement for outlay in regard to a Southland soldier on discharge from hospital. In reference to a soldier patient who is at present under the care of the society tho secretary advised that the Patriotic Association was making a contribution by way of assistance.
A soldier whose health had broken down, and who had been assisted to Hanmer to recuperate, wrote advising that he was feeling much better, ana would return to work with confidence.
Alias Williams reported that three ex-soldiers had applied for outfits of clothing. Two of the applications wore approved ones, and had been supplied.—Resolved that action be confirmed, and that in regard to the third application nothing be done in the meantime.
The secretary at headquarters wrote giving particulars re delegates from Auckland and Christchurch to the annual conference to be held in Dunedin. -—Resolved that the secretary reply requesting particulars re Wellington delegates, and with a view also to getting the actual date fixed, so that tho necessary accommodation may be arranged for.
A letter was received from headquarters relative to space at the Exhibition for samples or vocational work from the North, also exhibits illustrative of peace time and junior Red Cross work.—Mr Rosevear moved that the matter be left with Mr Smith and the secretary to draft and forward reply. This was seconded by Miss Rattrav and carried
There was received from Wellington a copy of a letter from the Health Department inviting co-operation in the matters of health work and health visitors. —Mr King considered that this matter more nearly concerned the St. John Ambulance Association, and that body could therefore consider the question.
The meeting received from headquarters a copy of the minutes of _a special conference held recently in Wellington to discuss the extension of peace-time work throughout the dominion. The following resolutions, among others, wore carried:—-“That this conference on peace-time activities recommends the separate centres of the New Zealand branch of the British Rod Cross Society and Order of St. John to set up a committee for extending the scope of peace-time work as embodied in the constitution.” “That it be a recommendation to each Red Cross centre that it consider the promotion of junior Red Cross as a part of peace-time work.”—Air C. B. Smith, as Otago’s delegate, enlarged upon the report furnished. The discussion had centred mainly on the junior Red Cross movement. The Red Cross display at the forthcoming Exhibition had also received considerable attention. In regard to the junior Red Cross, the Hon. Dr Collins, chairman of the Now Zealand Executive, had advised that money in hands of centres for peace-time work may be used for this branch. Wellington Centro has 300 women who have had three years’ training in first aid, homo nursing, and general Red Cross work. Auckland Centre is in favor of Otago getting. Sister Webster’s services for the launching of the junior Red Gross. He suggested sending a representative to Wellington to secure the fullest information.—-It was resolved that the Otago Centre of the Red Cros« Society send instructions to the Joint Peace'Council, Red Cross and Order of St. John, to form a junior Red Croat circle at the earliest possible date, and that this centre will furnish the funds to send a man to Wellington to go into the whole matter. On the motion of Mr Rosevear _ it was resolved that the matter of fitting up the Red Cross stall at the Exhibition lie left \yith the men on the committee, and that a report be furnished at next meeting. Reports received from the Red Cross nurses, fibster Webster (Taranaki), and Sister Clark (Canterbury and Westland) disclosed full activity in peacetime work. Instructional classes had been well attended. Hospitals and homes had been visited, and assistance and advice given. The Matron at Montecillo reported that during the month six patients had been admitted and six discharged. There are at present twenty-two patients in the Home. The patients were very pleased to receive a number of gift# sent along for their benefit. Everything at the Home is going along satisfactorily. , ... Mr Rosevear reported that, with a view to earning a little more interest, and anticipating the committee s approval, the treasurers had invested a portion of the funds in city debentures.—On the motion of Miss Graham, seconded by Miss Williams, the action was colifirmpd.
