A SUBSTANTIAL “SWAG”

• * EXTENSIVE BURGLARIES ALLEGED YOUNG MAN ARRESTED. Yesterday morning while the Rev. Knowles Kcmpton and his family were at ehurch a young man called at his house. Unfortunately, as it proved for the young man, ho was seen by neighbors to linger at the door, for it was afterwards found That the place had been burglariously entered. On the discovery being made a description of the visitor was given to the police. As is usual in most of these cases the description was of the slightest, but it proved sufficient for Detectives Beer and JRoycroft, who this morning accosted a young man, a stranger to the city, and after interrogating him took him to tho police station. That their suspicions were well founded was proved by tho “ swag ” that was afterwards traced to his possession. This included a large number of loose gems, obviously removed from rings, several sovereigns and half-sovereigns, a largo number of foreign coins, and other articles totalling in value somewhere between £.‘3UO and .€4OO. So far as can bo ascertained up to tho present, tho accused has probably been concerned in about twenty burglaries committed in ail four centres of the dominion and in smaller towns. The accused will be brought before tho court to-morrow morning and charged in connection with the local cases.
