PACIFIC RELATIONS CONFERENCE

RETURN OF NEW ZEALAND DELEGATES [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, July 20. The chief purpose of the Pacific Relations Conference, which has concluded at Honolulu, was to promote a, bettor understanding and spirit of good-will among the nations bordering on the Pacific. A number of delegates went from New Zealand, and three of them—the Hon. J. B. Gow (Opotiki), Mr A. 0. Caughey (Auckland), and Mr O. M. Luke' (Wellington)—returned by the Niagara to-day.

Discussing proceedings, Mr Luke said that the delegates numbered about 100, and there were twenty-five associate members. None of the delegates brought a mandate from his Government, but much valuable work was done, and this should open the way to further important discussions. Some of the most eminent men of the Tinted States ami Canada were present, and there were some very strong men among the other delegations. Must of the Chinese representatives were young university students, with two or three outstanding men among them, including Dr Wellington Koo, who had just come from Geneva. Japan also had some able non. The throe delegates left Honolulu some days before the conference concluded, but up to that tune much consideration hau been given to economic problems as well as racial ami religions questions. The industmlisatioh of China and Japan was the subject of a number of discussions, and the Chinese question, together uith the turmoil in that country, occupied a large part of the consideration up to the time the delegates loft, hut finality on most of those subjects had not been reached.

Mr Luke said that the machinery providing For consideration ,of ail aspects of the questions raised consisted first of all of a. round table conference, attended by those specially interested in the particular subject. These conferences reported to the forum, which was open to all delegates, and all findings were further discussed, and, in some cases, referred hack for further elucidation. Similarly when papers on social phases of the problems were pregented, discussion by all delegates was invited, so that al 'lnspects ot the subjects before the conference were fully ventilated.
