NO ROOM FOR TWO

THE “ LIGHTNING CHANGE ARTIST” PREMIER AT PALMERSTON NORTH. [Peii United Pkebs Association.] PALMERSTON N., July 20. On,his first visit to Palmerston North ns Prime Minister the Hon. J. G. Coates received an enthusiastic welcome. The civic reception was most cordial, and he was also greeted by returned soldiers, and spoke at the Reform League rally in the evening.

| At tiie last-named function lie made reference to the recent fusion negotiations. lie had been sincere, ho said, in his endeavor to bring such an amalgamation into being, but could not i agree to one condition laid down by ! the Liberals—that there should bo imi mediate reconstruction of the Ministry. 1 He was pledged for the remainder of : the session to carry out the programme hud down by Mr Massey. He asked all who believed in a sound, businesslike, and national policy to come behind him with their support. It seemed remarkable to him that, as soon as ho intimated his inability to agree to reconstruction of the Cabinet, the Liberals should have declared that the door had been banged, bolted, and barred. Mhy this sadden change of attitude? His hearers could arrive at the answer just as well as he. It was almost a calamity that such a, thing had happened. The name Liberal was a fine one, but what would the Liberals outside Parliament think of jettisoning this title? This was not the first change in name that the Liberal Party had effected. Some few years ago there had been a sudden change of name, and he believed a fusion took place; but it did not last long, and hack went the Liberals to the old banner. Mere Mr Milford and the party now groping again for support, and was the name “National” going to help them? Ho thought not, as it was a bit late. There was no mom lo.v two national parties in New Zealand. This latest move of Mr Milford’s savored of the lightning change rutist, and a party that had so many aliases to conserve its existence could not expect to receive the support of the people.
