THE BIG EXHIBITION

AN ARTISTIC MODEL CANTERBURY’S MANY RESOURCES. [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, July 20. Some idea of, what visitors to the Dunedin Exhibition may expect to see was given by a very effective model exhibited at the meeting of the Space Committee of the Exhibition to-day. The model, which is the work of Mr G. H. Holford, is a very artistic one, and gives due prominence to the many and varied resources of Canterbury. The design is 3ft 6in square, and has at the front entrance a luxurious lounge, which the committee proposes to make a feature of at the Canterbury Court. “ The granary of New Zealand,” is well to the front, and then follows the exhibits of the wool, meat, and dairying industries. On the other side the space is given to art and educational exhibits, and here it is probable the Ashburton bay will be found. Forestry, seeds, and fruit ore also represented. As a background to the court, stands Mount Cook, snowclad, with the Hermitage at its foot. This is very imposing. On the other side is a representation of the Otira Tunnel, the gateway of the West. In the centre is a replica of Lyttelton Harbor and Akaroa; while Lake Coleridge is also shown on the plan, with the addition of the Wairaakariri Gorge and Glacier. It will be seen that the scenic attractions of Canterbury will ho well advertised. The present model provides for the Timaru exhibit near the representation of Mount Cook. The fishing and shooting possibilities of Canterbury are also well represented. This model has not yet been decided on in particular, but the general lay-out has been accepted. Lighted as it is by miniature electric bulbs, the model gives one a most realistic impression of the resources of the province, and when in its proper setting of 5,000 square feet of floor space at the Exhibition it should do Canterbury' full justice. •
