The name of Adenauer, Cologne’s Chief Burgomaster, who objected to the citizens holding their annual carnival, and advised “ a week of mourning ” instead, on account of the prolongation of the Allied oc cupation, was probably more familiar to tho army of occupation than that of any other German, He was Cologne’s “ Bradbury,” tho name “Adenauer” appearing on ever}' note 'of tho various “ papiergel d ” issued by the municipality during the last few years. He was not always uneasy about the occpation. In 1920 lie assured the chief, of the Berlin Cabinet, then on a. visit to the Rhineland, that the British were carrying cm their difficult task “ will justice and understanding.”-
