MORE RECORDS THE GAME Ifl THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES No. JIT. Country clubs which were to tho fore in former years appear to ha\o diopped out, as no matches wore reported in the daily papers. The fact of papers being published in the various localities may account for this. There are, however, indications of a decided improvement in the frame, and meater interest appears to have been manifested by the various clubs. Interclub matches were more frequent, which tended to create a healthy rivalry, and certainly had an added interest loi the spectators. The various matches wore witnessed by increased attendances. The opening match of tho season 11869-70) of the Citizens' Club wm .Married v. Single. This resulted m a victory for tho bachelors, who scored 81 runs against the benedicts’ 40. Watson was (he only player who made a stand, scoring 11 rnns. " .Morrison six wickets for 16 and Wills four for 15 bowled throughout tho innings. Wills was highest scorer for the Single eleven with 17, Whetlmm coming next with 10. G. West was credited with seven wickets for 33 runs. There were lit teen wides on the score-sheet. On October 9, 1869, tho Dunedin Club played its first match of the season, when sides wore chosen by Maddoek and Collinson. Some very good batting was shown for so early in tho season. V\esi 14, Asher 13, and Whethem 12 were top scorers. Pledger look, live wickets. Watson 13, Coxhcad 11, and Bell 10 were the chief scorers for the Citizens. Deliver had the best bowling performance, securing live wickets.

On the same, day the. Citizens’ Club played Eleven v. Sixteen. The Eleven were defeated on tlio first innings by 10 runs, the. totals being 63 and 45. Wills and Smith in the second venture of the Eleven made 18 and 25 runs respectively, both not out. Cohen took Jiyo wickets for 13, and Watson four lor 23. Woolfe 16 and Ferguson 10 batted best for the Sixteen. G. West was credited with live wickets for 20 runs and Morrison three for 7 runs.

On October 23, 1869, a. match was played between teams of the Stage, and Press, the former winning by 10 runs. Substitutes Morrison (51) and Peake (13) were the only players who did anything with the bat in the second innings, and won the match for the Stage. T hey scored 13 and 104, and the Press replied with 73 and 34. Allen 15 and Woodifirld 12 reached double figures. Cohen was unplayable in the first innings, securing seven wickets. Bell and Morrison shared the bowling honors for the Stage. On the same afternoon the Dunedin (Tub played a club match, sides being chosen by * Gollinsou and Mncdoimcll. Collinson gavo a good exliibiliou of batting, scoring 50, and was ably supported by , Hundley with 16. The innings totalled 83. and Macdonncll's side responded, with 70. J. Fulton was top scorer with 17, Brown ami Rowlntt 12 each, and C. Kettle 11. Collinson and Evans were (he howlers for tho victors and J. Fulton and G. Kettle lor tho losers.

On November 6, 1869, a. combined 22 from the Press and the Stage tried conclusions with a Dunedin eleven, and lost by 5 runs, the scoring being 86 and 91. For tho Eleven J. Fulton 22, Evans 21, F. Fulton 11, ami Macdoimeil 10 reached double figures. Bell and Cohen bowled well for the Combined team, and Colhnsou and Hendlcy for the Eleven. ,Smith and Allen, with 17 runs each, played well for the Press.

On November 9, 1869, a match Dunedin ti.C. v. Twenty-two Citizens was played on the former’s ground, nnd resulted in a win for the Twenty-two on the first innings. The Citizens scored 91 and 72 and the Dunedin Club 55, thus losing the game by 38 runs. Gardner was top scorer with *25, and Clarke 11 was the only other player to roach double figures. Hendley nnd Wills bowled splendidly for tho victors, and Collinson, Fulton, and Kettle got tho majority of the wickets in the two innings. On November 13, 1869, the Dunedin Club played a scratch match, Collinson's side v. Maddocks’s side. The former made 165 runs, chiefly owing to the good batting of Hendley (57) and Macdonncll (21). Maddocks’s side made 42. Wills and Hendley trundled exceedingly well. On November 20, 1869, the Dunedin Club played a club match between sides chosen by Collinson and Macldock. The former reached the good total of 205 runs. No less than five got double figures. J. C. Fulton reached 46, with Hendley not far behind, with 43; next in order of merit being Russell not out 27, Brown 25. and Pinnock 25. This is the first recorded match other than interprovincial where the full bowling analysis is given, Haddock took five wickets for 59, and Macdonnell two for 36, Maddock’s side failed to make any stand with the bat, and were all out for 43 runs. Hendley ’ bowled splendidly, getting nine wickets for 17 runs.

On the same date the Citizens’ Chib played Married v. Single. The single members were the victors, scoring 83 to their opponents’ 45. Smith not out 16, Peake 13, and Cohen 10 batted best for the victors, and Watson 10 for the vanquished. On November 29, 1859, the First Eleven of tho Dunedin Club played Twenty-two of the Citizens’ Club. The eleven made 94, and the twenty-two 98 runs, thus winning by the narrow margin of 4 runs. J. C. Fulton was highest scorer, with 31 rims, Cairns and Collinson coming next with 21 and 14. Cohen took seven wickets for 37 runs. G. W. Gcdcles 17, Peake 14, and Cohen 15 batted best for the winners. Cairns (six for 29) and Maddock (eight for 29) were the chief howlers. The Dunedin Club, on St. Andreev's Day (November 30), played Eleven v. Twenty-two. The Eleven were representatives picked to play against Canterbury, and the Twenty-two were chosen from the Citizens' and Dunedin Chibs, with Hendley. The Eleven were victorious, with 94 and 76. The combined team'batted first, but did not make much of a stand, and were got rid of quickly by Kettle, Cairns, and Wills. J. Munson just reached double figures, and was (op scorer. Collinson played a good innings for 29, J. O. Fulton following with 28, and Turton 11. G. West (three wickets for 37), Macfarlano (two for 32), and Hendley (four for 17) were the bowlers. On the same day the Albion Club played Twenty-two Volunteers. The Albion C.C. in their first innings scored only 35 runs, owing to the good bowling of Harraway (underhand) and Douglass, but were more successful in their second venture, reaching a total of 87 runs. Wells and Sherwin, with 10 each in the first imiinns. and

Little (22), Shepherd (15), Cohen (13), and Sherwin (mil out 12) ni the second, hatted well fur their rims. The Volunteers made 51 and 25. Douglass was the only batsman who managed double figures in two innings, making 24 runs. Cohen, in the first innings, secured the majority of the wickets, and he, with Shepherd in the second, bowled throughout. There were no less than twenty-six ducks in both innings of the Volunteers. On December 11, 1860, the Dunedin Club played a scratch match, sides being chosen by Maddock and Collinson. Collinson's side won by 100 runs. Collinson was in fine nick, making 57, and was ably supported by C. Kettle, who scored 27, out of a total of 134 runs. Maddock’s side reached 34 runs, the bowling of Kettle and Hcndley being 100 good for (hem. On the same day the Citizens’ Club played Married v. Single. The benedicts made only 25, and for six wickets in the second innings totalled 44 runs. Cohen and Wilis were, in good form with the hall. The single members scored 117 (Wills 55, Smith and Ferguson 20 apiece). On December .18, 1869. the Citizens’ Club tided conclusions with the second eleven of (he D.C.C., and were defeated by 38 runs, Young and Drown proving too much for them. Dunedin’s total was 86. of which Drown made 20, T'owsey 14, Scrimgeour 12, and I’innock 10. Smith and Ferguson were most successful for tho Citizens, making 15 and 10 runs respectively. On Christmas Day the Albion Club met eleven of tho Tokomairiro Club on (he latter’s ground. 'The wicket, all things considered. was a passable one, but the outfielding was very rough. One of the features of the game was the number of run outs against the. country club, six falling victims by being too slow between the wickets. Albion made 56 and 75, and Toko. 34 and 62. Extras reached the enormous total of 62 runs in the four innings. Peyton (17 and 10), Wells (12). Goudie (12), Shepherd and Kirk (10 each) were the principal scorers for the visitors. M'lntyrc and Marryaft, with 14 runs each, headed the batting for Toko. Gregory and Cooke, for Toko,, and Cohen ami Shepherd, for the visitors, howled well.

On December 25, 1869, the match on the Southern Recreation Ground was Eleven D.C.C. v. Nineteen of the Citizens’ Club which was won by the former by 25 runs. J. Ci Fulton (30), Towsey (23), and F. Fulton (15) played best for Dunedin. Morrison and Wills were the bowlers for the Citizens. Wills and Thompson scored 13 and 10 respectively for the Citizens. J, C. Fulton and Collinson shared the bowlinn honors for Dunedin.
